Ming Ren Club
The Ming Ren Club is located in a republican era house dated back to 1919, in a quiet alley just off the bustling Avenue of Dong Si. The structure was built from timber which was taken from houses that were razed near the Lama Temple, just up the street. The house was used as a make-shift church until 1993, when a group of scholars, historians and collectors of antiques established the Ming Ren Club to serve as a cultural center to research and discuss traditional food, art and antiques.
Today the Ming Ren Club houses an extensive collection of Chinese antiques ranging from fossils and stone tools to Ming Dynasty porcelain and Qing Dynasty furniture. Antique auctions and art exhibitions are the highlights of the club. Imperial-type banquet dinners for small and large parties are offered as well.
While the tables and settings are not elaborate, the cluttered hodge-podge of antiques gives the Ming Ren Club a unique atmosphere comparable to that of a museum vault. Antiques and curios are literally sprawled everywhere, and the club staffs take great pride in describing many of the treasures in the collection. If you can get a knowledgeable staff to chat with people in your group, you will get an enormous wealth of information concerning chinas ancient national treasure, the murals in the caves of Dung Huang. If you dont speak Chinese, be sure to bring an interpreter if you want an impromptu history lesson!
A scrumptious feast will start at bout 150 RMB per person, and includes imperial recipes like Mandarin sweet and sour fish, Beijing favorites as well as the Ming Ren Clubs own modern creations which includes hot Coca Cola boiled in ginger. Reservation is highly recommended.
