More than 350,000 people have applied to volunteer for the Beijing 2008 Summer Olympic Games since the registration process began August 28, 2006, organizers said Wednesday.
Applicants include 180,000 students and teachers from Beijing universities, 80,000 Beijingers from other sectors and about 100,000 from other provinces and municipalities outside Beijing, said Li Shixin, member of the Volunteer department.
The Beijing Olympic Games need about 70,000 volunteers and the Beijing Paralympics require 30,000.
Organizers say the Beijing Volunteer Program includes six working projects and one theme campaign – “Smiling Beijing”. The projects include the “Towards the Olympics” Voluntary Service Project, the BOCOG Pre-Games Volunteer Project, the Games-time Volunteer Project, the City Volunteer Project, the Social Volunteer Project, and the Olympic Volunteer Work Legacy Transformation Project.
Li said organizers will do their best to select excellent people and assign them to appropriate positions.
